Fun running blogs: The girls

The best running blogs by women

Let's face it. Whether you're sitting at your desk or standing in line at the supermarket, there are about a million times a day you'd rather be running. For those times you can't lace up and head out the door, blogs are a great way to stay connected to the sport. They're updated frequently and are usually short enough to be read on the fly.

There are thousands of running blogs out there, so finding the right one for your tastes shouldn't be too difficult. The following is a list of a few favorites, all written by female runners.

With race reports from ultras in some of the remotest places on the planet, Ultra Runner Girl is like no other running blog on the net. Human rights worker and blogger Stephanie Case fell into ultra running quite by accident. That is, after a little too much too drink, she paid the deposit on a 250K ultra in Vietnam and actually ended up going. Oh, and she ended up taking third place in that race. Well, then. Look for tales of running in some amazing places, from the UTMB in Europe to the Gobi Desert and Nepal. Our personal favorite? Case's report from training in Bamyan, Afghanistan, where she happily notes that she could run without being shot at. This blog's adventurous spirit will remind you that the world is full of fantastic places to run.

The Tall Mom on the Run blog is run by Wonder Woman. She may not be the official Wonder Woman, but she comes close. "Tall Mom" is a wife, a mother of two boys, a full-time career woman and a runner. And she's not just your average runner: she's an RRCA certified running coach and an official Marathon Maniac. This is the perfect blog for anyone who's ever felt too busy or too bogged down with commitments to run. It's also a great place for inspiration, honest product reviews and amazing race reports. The bottom line? This blog will remind you that you are capable of doing it all.

Chris McDougall famously described Catra Corbett  as "a beautiful and kaleidoscopically-tattooed Goth chick who once, just for fun, ran all 211 miles of the John Muir Trail across Yosemite National Park and then turned around and ran all the way back." With the occasional typo, bright pink and purple text and large font, this blog never takes itself too seriously. Corbett has got plenty of racing tales, pictures of herself in her wickedly wild gear and lots of positive messages for her readers. Come here for smiles, and to be inspired.

Marcia's Healthy Slice is a blog about running and healthy living. Marcia is a mother, wife, animal lover and self-described "recovering fat girl" who took up marathon training in midlife and caught the running bug right away. She even qualified for Boston at her second marathon! Look for great recipes, lots of photos, detailed race reports, reviews of products that Marcia loves and even giveaways. With so much going on at this site, Marcia's Healthy Slice simply radiates motivation and positive energy. Who could ask for more?

Trying to come up with a list of the "best" running blogs by women is nearly impossible; there are simply too many brilliant blogs by women runners. Choosing favorites proved to be equally daunting.

The blogs mentioned here are a few personal favorites among many wonderful sites. So many were left out, and it feels wrong not to mention them here. To find more of the best and most popular blogs by women runners, use Google, or have a look at this excellent list

Happy reading. And, happy running!
